Signs Your Computer Needs an SSD Upgrade

Old mechanical hard drives slow down significantly over time and become the single biggest bottleneck in an otherwise capable PC. If your computer is more than four or five years old and still has its original hard drive, the drive is almost certainly the reason it feels slow. Here are the signs that an SSD upgrade is exactly what your machine needs.

Boot Time Over Two Minutes
A healthy mechanical drive boots Windows in 60 to 90 seconds. If you are waiting two, three or four minutes from pressing the power button to a usable desktop, the drive is the problem.
Programs Hang When Opening
Chrome, Word, or your email client taking 15 to 30 seconds to open is a sign the drive cannot keep up with read requests. On an SSD, the same programs open in one to three seconds.
Windows Updates Take Hours
Updates that take half a day to install are usually bottlenecked by a slow drive writing update files. The same updates on an SSD complete in a fraction of the time.
Clicking or Grinding Sounds
Any clicking, grinding or repetitive ticking from inside the computer is a mechanical hard drive under stress. This is a warning sign of imminent failure and should be addressed immediately before data is lost.
PC Struggles With Basic Tasks
If your PC feels sluggish just browsing the web or writing documents, and you have ruled out virus infection and too many startup programs, the hard drive is almost certainly the cause.
Drive Errors in Windows
Error messages about drive health, requests to run CHKDSK, or frequent freezes while saving files all indicate drive degradation. Upgrading before it fails completely protects your data.

The Difference

Old Hard Drive vs SSD. The Numbers.

The performance gap between a mechanical hard drive and a modern SSD is not subtle. These are real world figures based on the upgrades we carry out in Perth every week. The improvement is immediate and dramatic from the moment you turn the PC on after the upgrade.

Our Process

How We Do the SSD Upgrade

We clone your existing drive to the new SSD rather than doing a fresh Windows install. This means everything on your current computer, including Windows, all your programs, all your files, your browser bookmarks, your desktop layout and your settings, comes across exactly as it was. You collect a PC that feels like a new machine but looks exactly how you left it.

Drive Health Check Before We Start
Before cloning anything we run a health check on your existing hard drive using CrystalDiskInfo. This tells us whether the drive is healthy enough for a clean clone or whether it has errors that need addressing first. If the drive is failing we tell you before proceeding and discuss your options, including data recovery if necessary.
Confirm the Right SSD for Your Machine
We verify the correct SSD type for your specific laptop or desktop model. Different machines use different interfaces including 2.5 inch SATA, M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe. Getting this wrong means the drive will not fit or will not be detected. We confirm this before sourcing or fitting anything.
Full Data Clone to the New SSD
We use professional cloning software to copy your entire existing drive to the new SSD sector by sector. Windows, programs, files, settings and all. The clone is verified after completion to confirm it is bootable and complete. This typically takes one to three hours depending on how much data is on the current drive.
SSD Installed, Old Drive Kept or Removed
The new SSD is fitted into the machine. If your laptop or desktop has a spare drive bay, we can install the old hard drive as secondary storage so you keep all that extra space. If there is no spare bay, we return the old drive to you separately so you still have it as a backup. We let you decide what you want done with the old drive.
Speed Test and Handover
We boot Windows from the new SSD, time the boot, confirm everything opens correctly and run a quick benchmark to verify the SSD is performing at full speed. You collect a machine that has been tested and confirmed working. We show you the before and after boot times so you can see the improvement for yourself.

What Our Customers Say

Perth locals who have had SSD upgrades done at FixMyPC Perth in Canning Vale.

★★★★★

My laptop was taking four minutes to boot and I had given up on it. After the SSD upgrade it boots in about 15 seconds. Genuinely feels like a brand new machine. Wish I had done it years ago.

Mark D. — Canning Vale
★★★★★

I bought the SSD myself online and they fitted it and transferred everything across for $65. Every single file, program and setting was there when I got it back. Couldn't fault the service at all.

Sandra K. — Thornlie
★★★★★

My desktop was making clicking noises and running slow. They checked the drive health, found it was failing, and recommended an SSD before it died completely. Really glad they caught that. Everything was saved.

Ray F. — Cockburn
★★★★★

Got the SSD sourced through them and the price was better than what I found at Scorptec. Dropped it off in the morning and had it back by 2pm the same day running perfectly. Will be bringing all my family's computers here.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. If you have already purchased an SSD or find one at a price you are happy with, bring it in and we fit it and transfer all your data for the flat $65 labour fee. Before you purchase anything, send us your laptop or desktop model on WhatsApp and we will confirm the exact drive type you need so you do not buy the wrong one.
No. We clone your existing drive to the new SSD which copies everything across. Windows, all your installed programs, your files, your desktop layout, your browser bookmarks and your settings all come across exactly as they were. When you collect the PC it works identically to before except significantly faster. You do not need to reinstall anything.
We check how much storage you are currently using before recommending a size. As a general guide, 500GB suits most home users who do not store large media collections. If you have a lot of photos, videos or games, 1TB is the comfortable choice and the price difference between 500GB and 1TB is usually not significant. We will make a specific recommendation at drop off based on your current usage.
There are three main types. 2.5 inch SATA drives fit older laptops and desktops. M.2 SATA drives fit in the M.2 slot of mid range machines. M.2 NVMe drives are faster and fit in newer machines. Using the wrong type means the drive will not physically fit or will not be detected. We verify the correct type for your specific machine before sourcing or accepting any drive. Just send us your model number on WhatsApp before buying anything.
We return it to you. The old drive is yours and we hand it back at collection. If your machine has a spare internal drive bay we can install it as secondary storage at no extra charge. If not, you can use it in a USB external enclosure as a backup drive. We never keep or dispose of your old drive without your explicit instruction.
They solve different problems and are often done together. An SSD upgrade addresses slowness caused by a slow drive. A Windows reinstall addresses slowness caused by software clutter, corrupted Windows files, or severe virus damage. If your drive is slow and Windows is also in poor shape, combining both gives you the best outcome and we offer a combined price. We will give you an honest recommendation at drop off.
Yes. We upgrade SSDs in all Windows laptops and desktop computers regardless of brand. Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, MSI, Toshiba, Samsung and custom built desktops. The process and pricing are the same. For gaming desktops we can also add additional NVMe drives for game storage without replacing your existing drive.
