Why Huntingdale machines fail the way they do
Huntingdale was built out during the housing boom of the 1970s and expanded again through the 1990s. It is a settled residential suburb in the City of Gosnells, around 9,000 people across roughly five square kilometres, and the overwhelming majority of households are families who own the place they live in.
That history shows up in the machines. Huntingdale is not a suburb of brand new estates full of year-old laptops. It is households that have had the same desktop under the study desk since the kids were at Huntingdale Primary, and home offices running hardware bought back when working from home was still unusual. The most common thing we are asked about from Huntingdale is not a dramatic failure at all. It is a computer that has slowly become unbearable to use.
That matters because the fix is usually far cheaper than people expect. A machine taking four minutes to reach the desktop is very often an ageing mechanical hard drive that has simply reached the end of its useful speed, not a computer that needs replacing. The same goes for the overheating and sudden-shutdown complaints we get from older towers that have spent a decade quietly filling with dust. Replacing a working computer because it feels slow is the expensive answer to a cheap problem.
Before you replace it: bring it in for the diagnostic first. If the machine genuinely is not worth repairing we will tell you that, and you will have paid the diagnostic fee rather than the cost of a new computer you did not need.
What we see most from Huntingdale
Slow, ageing desktops
Three or four minutes to reach the desktop, then slow again once it gets there. Usually an ageing mechanical drive rather than a machine at the end of its life.
From $175Overheating and sudden shutdowns
A decade of dust in the heatsink and dried-out thermal paste. The machine turns itself off under load, usually with no warning.
From $89Pop-ups and hijacked browsers
New toolbars, a homepage nobody set, ads appearing outside the browser. Common on family machines shared between several people.
From $99Files that will not open
Documents missing or erroring. Stop using the machine straight away, because continuing to run it can overwrite what is still recoverable.
From $149Will not turn on at all
No lights, no fans, or lights but nothing on screen. On a desktop this is frequently the power supply rather than anything on the motherboard.
From $120Locked out of Windows
A forgotten password, or a Microsoft account nobody can get back into. Usually recoverable without wiping anything.
From $79Laptop repair for Huntingdale
Laptops make up a good share of the work that comes to us from Huntingdale, and the faults split fairly neatly into two groups: things that broke because something happened to the machine, and things that wore out.
The ones that broke are cracked screens, snapped hinges, keyboards that met a cup of tea, and charging ports that have been pulled sideways one too many times. These are physical repairs and the part decides the price, so we quote the part before ordering it. The ones that wore out are batteries that no longer hold a charge, fans that have become loud enough to notice, and drives on their way out.
One thing worth knowing before you come in: bring the charger. A surprising share of the laptops brought in as dead turn out to have a failed charger rather than a failed laptop, and having yours on hand saves a step in the diagnosis.
- Cracked and flickering screens
- Battery replacement
- Charging port repair
- Keyboard replacement
- Hinge repair
- Liquid spill cleaning
- Trackpad replacement
- Fan and overheating
Desktop and PC repair
Desktops are the older half of what comes out of Huntingdale, and they are also the ones most worth repairing. A tower from 2015 with a mechanical drive and 8GB of RAM is not a machine at the end of its life. It is a machine with a slow drive. Migrating it to an SSD typically makes more difference to how it feels day to day than any other single change, and it costs a fraction of replacing the computer.
The other common desktop job is heat. Towers sit on carpet, under desks, pulling dust in for years. Eventually the thermal paste dries out, the heatsink clogs, and the machine starts shutting itself off under load with no warning. A deep clean and fresh paste fixes it, and it is an afternoon rather than a rebuild.
If you are not in a position to lift a tower into the car, on-site visits are available across Huntingdale, and remote support covers anything that does not need hands on the machine at all.
Data recovery for Huntingdale
The hardest conversations we have are with people whose only copy of something was on a drive that has stopped working. Family photos, tax records, a small business's invoicing history. Recovery is often possible, but it is never guaranteed and it always costs more than a backup would have.
There are two broad cases. A drive that still powers up but is failing has a good success rate, and the sooner it is imaged the better. A drive that has stopped spinning entirely is harder, and the odds drop. In both cases the single most important thing you can do is stop using the machine the moment you notice files are missing, because every minute it keeps running risks overwriting what is still there.
If nothing is backed up right now, that is worth fixing before something goes wrong rather than after. It does not have to be us: an external drive and an afternoon will do. Any backup beats the arrangement where the only copy lives on one ageing drive.
What computer repairs cost for Huntingdale customers
The diagnostic and repair is one flat fee rather than an hourly rate, so the price does not move because a fault turned out to be fiddly. Parts are quoted separately and never fitted without your approval. There is no call-out charge on a drop-off and no travel fee, because you are coming to the workshop rather than us coming to you.

How a repair works
Drop it in, no appointment
Bring the machine to the Canning Vale workshop whenever suits. We take the details and what it has been doing. Bring the charger if it is a laptop, and your Windows login if you have it.
Full diagnostic
The machine goes on the bench and gets tested properly rather than guessed at. This is what the flat fee covers, and it happens before anyone quotes you for parts.
You hear the price first
We call or message with what is wrong, what it costs and how long it will take. Nothing gets ordered or fitted until you say go.
Repair and collection
Most jobs are ready the same day or the next. Anything waiting on a part depends on the part, and you are told that wait up front rather than after. Labour carries a 30 day warranty.
Streets, schools and nearby suburbs
Huntingdale is bounded by Thornlie to the north west, Kenwick to the north, Gosnells to the east and Southern River to the south, with Canning Vale and our workshop directly west. It is about 20 kilometres from the Perth CBD.
If you are coming from the Warton Road, Balfour Street, Holmes Street or Southern River Road side of the suburb, the run west along Ranford Road is the straightforward way in. Families around Huntingdale Primary School, Southern River College and Yarralinka Primary School are all within the same short trip, and so is anyone near Sutherlands Park, Charles Hook Park or Armstrong Park.
We cover the surrounding suburbs on the same terms, so if you are closer to one of these than to Huntingdale itself the answer does not change:
- Thornlie
- Gosnells
- Southern River
- Canning Vale
- Kenwick
- Maddington
- Harrisdale
- Piara Waters
Remote support is available Australia wide for anything that does not need the machine physically in front of us, which covers most software problems, email setup, printer issues and account lockouts.
Questions we get from Huntingdale customers
Yes. Our workshop is in Canning Vale, roughly a 6 minute drive west of Huntingdale along Ranford Road. Drop-offs do not need an appointment. Most repairs are ready the same day or the next day, and we call or message you the moment the machine is diagnosed rather than leaving you waiting.
Both are available. Most Huntingdale customers drop off, because the drive is short and bench work is faster and cheaper than an on-site visit. On-site is worth it when the problem is the network, the printer or a desktop that is awkward to unplug and move. Remote support handles anything that does not need hands on the machine.
Usually worth repairing, and more often than people expect. A machine that feels unusably slow is very often carrying an ageing mechanical hard drive rather than being at the end of its life, and migrating it to an SSD changes how it feels day to day for a fraction of the cost of a new computer. If a machine genuinely is not worth repairing we will say so at the diagnostic stage rather than after the work.
The diagnostic and repair is $120 all-in, which covers the full diagnostic, all repair labour and a 30 day warranty on that labour. Parts are quoted separately and never fitted without your approval. There is no separate call-out charge for a drop-off and no travel fee, because Huntingdale customers come to the workshop rather than us coming to them.
Most common faults are same day or next day. Software work such as virus removal, a Windows reinstall or a tune-up is usually done the same day. Anything waiting on a part depends on the part, and you get told the wait before any work starts rather than after.
Often, yes. Recovery from a failing drive that still powers up has a good success rate. A drive that has stopped spinning entirely is harder and the odds drop. The single most important thing is to stop using the machine as soon as you notice files missing, because continuing to run it can overwrite what is still recoverable.
Just turn up. Drop-offs do not need an appointment. If you would rather check first, message us and we will tell you whether the fault sounds like something we can turn around quickly, and roughly what it is likely to cost.
The charger, if it is a laptop, because a fair share of laptops brought in as dead turn out to have a failed charger rather than a failed laptop. Your Windows or Microsoft account login if you have it, since plenty of jobs stall waiting on a password nobody can remember. A desktop tower on its own is fine, no need for the monitor, keyboard or mouse unless the fault involves them.
