Laptop batteries wear out with every charge cycle. After a few years the charge that used to last a day can be gone in an hour, the percentage jumps around, or the laptop only runs while it is plugged in.

A swollen battery is the one to treat as urgent. It pushes the trackpad up, bends the case or lifts the keyboard, and it should not be charged or left plugged in. Bring it in and we replace it straight away.

We fit a battery made for your model and test it before you collect the laptop. Most major brands are supported. We do not replace batteries on MacBook or Surface devices.

A charger that only works when the cable is held a certain way usually comes down to the port. Plugging in and out every day wears it, and a tug on the cable can crack it or break it off the board.

We repair or replace the port on laptops and 2-in-1 devices, including USB-C charging ports. If it turns out to be the charger rather than the laptop, we tell you, so you only buy what you need.

A laptop that shows no sign of life can be the battery, the charger, the charging port, the power button, the memory, the screen or the board. Some of those are cheap fixes and some are not, so this is one where we find the cause before quoting anything.

A drop, a knock or something left on the keyboard when the lid was closed can crack the panel. A crack with a clear image behind it can wait a little. Black patches, colour bleeding across the image or a screen that has gone dark mean the panel itself is damaged, and that tends to spread.

Laptop panels are not one universal part. Size, resolution, refresh rate, touch and the connector all vary, sometimes between two versions of the same model. When the problem changes as you move the lid, the panel is often fine. The display cable runs through the hinge and wears where it flexes, or its connector works loose. Repairing that is a smaller job than a new screen, and usually cheaper.

We test which it is before quoting, so you are not sold a new panel when the fault was the cable.

A hinge that is stiff, loose or cracked puts strain on the screen and the case every time the lid opens. Left alone, it pulls the mounts out of the case and can damage the display cable that runs through it, which turns a hinge job into a bigger one.

Worth booking in while it is only loose. We repair or replace the hinge and check the mounts and cable while the laptop is open.

A blue screen, the "blue screen of death", is Windows stopping itself to prevent damage. It happens once in a while on most computers. When it keeps happening, something is wrong, and the stop code on its own rarely tells you what.

The common causes are a failing SSD, faulty memory, a driver that clashes with an update, overheating, or corrupted Windows files. Some are software fixes and some need a part, which is why we test the hardware before touching Windows. Guessing wrong costs you twice.

A laptop that powers on but never reaches the desktop has usually lost part of Windows, often after an update that did not finish, a power cut mid-update or a drive that is starting to fail.

We check the drive first. If the hardware is healthy we repair Windows where we can. When it needs a fresh start, the reinstall includes backing up your files first and putting them back after, so nothing is lost. If the drive is failing, we replace it and move your data across. Malware slows a laptop down, fills it with ads and in the worst cases steals passwords or banking details. The scam warnings that tell you to call a number are not from Microsoft. If you have already let someone connect to your laptop, stop using it for banking and bring it in.

SSDs are fast and have no moving parts, but they still wear out and fail, and when they go they can go quickly. Older laptops with a mechanical hard drive give more warning: freezing, clicking and files that take forever to open.

Photos, work files and documents are usually still on the drive even when the laptop will not start. We take the drive out and recover what is on it, whether the rest of the laptop is fixable or not.

A drive that is slow or partly readable is the failing-drive price. A drive that will not spin or mount at all is the dead-drive price, and on that one you pay nothing if we cannot recover your files. The sooner a failing drive comes in, the better the odds. A laptop that has slowed down over the years is rarely worn out. The usual cause is an old mechanical hard drive, not enough memory for how it is used now, or both. Swapping the hard drive for an SSD is the single biggest speed difference you can make to an older laptop, and many laptops also take more RAM.

We tell you what your model can take and what is worth doing before you spend anything. Some thin laptops have memory soldered to the board, and we say so rather than sell an upgrade that cannot be fitted. Keyboards wear, collect crumbs and take the first hit in a spill. We replace single keys where the model allows it, or swap the whole keyboard. On some laptops the keyboard is built into the top case, and we tell you when that changes the quote.

We replace and calibrate the trackpad. If it is being pushed up from underneath, the battery is usually swelling behind it, and we check that first. Replacing the trackpad without the battery would not fix it.

These can be a driver, a setting, a loose internal connector or the part itself. The diagnostic finds which and covers the repair labour. If a part is needed, we quote it before fitting it.

Dust packs into the fan and the cooling fins, and the thermal paste between the processor and the heatsink dries out. The laptop runs hot, the fan runs flat out, and it slows itself down to cope or shuts off to protect itself.

A proper laptop clean means taking it apart, not blowing air through the vents. We strip it down, clean the fan and cooling fins, replace the thermal paste and check the fan itself. Temperatures come back down and the noise with them. Gaming laptops run hotter and take longer to strip down, so they have their own price.

Turn it off, unplug it and bring it in as soon as you can. Do not charge it to see if it works. Liquid keeps working its way in and causes corrosion over the following days, even when the laptop still seems fine.
