Adware and browser hijackers are the most common infections we see. They change your home page and search engine, inject ads into every page and send your searches through their own servers, where what you look for is tracked and sold.
They are also usually a sign that something else came in with them. We clean every browser on the computer, remove the programs behind the ads, and reset what was changed, without losing your bookmarks or saved passwords.

Scams, hacks and ransomware
These are the urgent ones, because money or personal details are at risk. If one of these has happened, stop using the computer for banking or shopping until it has been checked.
Tech support scams and remote access
Microsoft, Apple, your bank and your internet provider will never show a pop-up asking you to call them, and will never ring you out of the blue to fix your computer. Those warnings and calls are scams. The pop-up itself is usually just a web page and does no damage, as long as you do not call the number.
If you did call, and let someone connect to your computer, treat it as urgent. Do not use that computer for banking. Contact your bank from your phone, and change your email and banking passwords from a different device. Then bring the computer in.

Ransomware scrambles your files and asks for payment to unlock them. Turn the computer off, unplug any external drives, and bring it in. Paying is a gamble: many people who pay never get a working key.
We remove the ransomware and check what can be saved: earlier copies Windows kept, cloud copies, backups that were not connected at the time, and files it did not reach. Is that virus warning real?
Real protection, such as Windows Security, shows its alerts in the corner of the screen, names the file it found, and deals with it itself. It never asks you to phone anyone, pay by gift card or download a separate program to fix it.
A warning that fills the whole browser, plays a sound, shows a phone number or says your computer will be locked is a scam page. Close the browser. If it will not close, turn the computer off. If you already called the number or paid, see the section on tech support scams above.
