Plenty of computers sold only a few years ago still shipped with a mechanical hard drive. Everything waits on it: starting up, opening programs, saving files, loading games. Replacing it with an SSD makes the same computer feel several times faster at almost everything, and it is the upgrade we recommend first for any computer that still has one.

Running out of space for photos, videos or games? Most desktops and some laptops have room for a second drive. We fit it, set it up in Windows, and move the large folders across so the main drive has space to breathe. A full drive also slows a computer down, so this often helps speed as well.

Browsers, video calls and modern programs use far more memory than they did a few years ago. With too little, the computer falls back on the drive and everything slows down. More RAM lets it keep more open at once without struggling.

We check how much memory your computer has, how much it actually uses, and the maximum and type it takes, then supply and fit the right RAM, DDR4 or DDR5, with XMP or EXPO switched on in the BIOS so it runs at its full rated speed. If you have already bought the RAM, the labour-only price covers fitting and configuring it.

Some thin laptops have memory soldered to the board. We check yours first and tell you if that is the case, rather than sell an upgrade that cannot be fitted.

For gaming and creative work, the graphics card makes the biggest difference. We seat and power the new card, fully remove the old drivers, install the latest Nvidia or AMD drivers and check it is stable under load.

A computer that runs hot slows itself down to protect itself. An aftermarket air cooler or AIO, fresh thermal paste, or extra case fans for better airflow bring temperatures down, and with them noise. Better cooling is also what lets a processor hold its boost speed through a long task or game.

A processor upgrade is possible when the motherboard supports a faster chip, and on some desktops it is a good-value way to add years of life. On others the board, the memory and the processor would all need to change together, which is closer to a new build.

Message us your computer's specs, or the make and model, what you use it for and your budget. We tell you what is actually worth upgrading, in order of the difference it makes, and what it will cost fitted. If an upgrade will not help, or the computer is better replaced, we say so.
