No power at all
You press the power button and nothing happens: no lights, no fans, no sound.
Desktop PC won't turn on
On a desktop, no power at all is most often the power supply, the box at the back that the power cable plugs into. They wear out, and storms, surges and heat speed that up. It can also be the power button, a loose internal cable, or less often the motherboard.
We test the power supply and each connection, find what has failed, and replace it. If there was a burning smell, unplug it and do not try it again before bringing it in.

Laptop won't turn on or charge
A laptop that shows no sign of life is usually one of three things: the charger, the charging port, or the battery. A charger can fail without looking any different, a port wears loose, and a completely flat or failed battery can stop the laptop starting even when it is plugged in.

Powers on, but no picture or no start
Something happens when you press the button, but it never gets to Windows.
Turns on but no display
When a computer powers on but never shows a picture, it is failing its own start-up checks before Windows is even involved. The usual causes are memory that has worked loose or failed, the graphics card, a display cable, or on a laptop the screen itself. Beeps or flashing lights at start-up are the computer's way of saying which part it is unhappy with.

Turns on, then turns straight off
A computer that starts and then cuts out is usually protecting itself. It might be overheating, often from a cooler that has come loose or dried-out paste, a power supply that cannot hold up once the computer starts drawing power, or a short somewhere inside.
This one is worth bringing in rather than trying again and again, since repeated attempts can make a power or heat fault worse. We find the cause and fix it.

Stuck on the logo or won't boot into Windows
If you see the manufacturer's logo, the hardware is mostly working, and the problem is getting Windows started. The causes are a damaged Windows start-up, often after an interrupted update, or a drive that is failing.

Won't turn on after a spill
Turn it off, unplug it, and do not try to turn it on or charge it to see if it works. Power running through a wet board is what turns a spill into real damage. Bring it in as soon as you can. Getting your files off a computer that won't start
A computer that will not turn on almost never means your files are gone. The drive is usually fine even when the power supply, the motherboard or the screen has failed. If the computer is worth repairing, the files stay on it. If it is not, we take the drive out and recover your files, whether the rest of the computer is fixable or not.

Before you bring it in
- Check it is not something simple: the wall switch is on, the power cable is pushed fully into the computer, and a laptop charger's light comes on.
- If there was a spill, a burning smell or a storm, unplug it and do not keep trying to turn it on.
- Do not open it up to look inside. It rarely helps and it can make a power fault worse.
- Note what it does when you press power: nothing, lights only, fans and no picture, beeps, or a logo that goes no further. It speeds up the diagnosis.
- Bring the charger if it is a laptop, and the power cable if it is a desktop.
